Mark.5.17 – 18 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts. And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.
The people of the region had just witnessed something extraordinary. A man who had long tormented the community; living among tombs, disturbing the peace, and bound by forces beyond human control was suddenly calm and restored. The atmosphere of the territory had changed. A presence had entered that displaced darkness and restored order.
Yet instead of embracing that presence, the community made a shocking request: they asked Jesus to leave.What a paradox. They saw the miracle, yet rejected the Miracle Worker. They experienced the freedom He brought, yet feared the cost of His presence.
Sometimes people prefer a familiar chaos over a transforming presence. The presence of Jesus does more than solve problems; it rearranges priorities, exposes hidden things, and calls territories into new alignment. Not everyone is ready for that. But in the midst of that rejection stood one man; the one who had been delivered.
While the crowd asked Jesus to depart, the healed man begged to remain with Him. The transformation he experienced was too deep to ignore. He knew that the One who had restored his life was not someone to casually let go. This contrast reveals a powerful truth: those who have truly encountered Jesus long to stay near Him.
When His presence has lifted torment, restored dignity, and given a new beginning, the natural response is hunger for closeness. Gratitude becomes attachment. Deliverance births devotion.
The healed man understood something the community missed: The One who changes your life is the One you must not allow to depart. Many people admire Jesus from a distance. Few cling to Him because they know what their lives were before He came.
The question for us today is simple: Are we like the crowd who saw but sent Him away, or like the man who was changed and could not bear His departure? A true encounter with Jesus produces a heart that says: “Lord, the One who turned my life around must not depart from me.”
My heart cry to the Lord
Lord Jesus, let my heart never grow familiar with Your presence. May I never push away the One who brings life, freedom, and transformation. Keep my heart like the man You healed—grateful, devoted, and longing to remain with You always. Amen.
